Biography

The music of Israeli composer Lior Navok reaches a worldwide audience in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Berlin Philharmonic, Sydney Opera House, Oper Frankfurt, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Staatsoper Berlin, Nürnberg Opera, to name just a few. Curious to explore and collaborate with unique artists, he writes challenging, yet communicative music. 

His passion for the stage and dramatic music has already been the source of two operas: The Bet (based on a short story by Anton Chekhov), and An unserem Fluss (By Our River), commissioned by Oper Frankfurt, which celebrated its critically acclaimed world premiere in 2015. Navok enjoys expanding the repertoire of symphonic, chamber and choral music, collaborating with orchestras and soloists worldwide.

An Israeli composer, he has reflected upon the holocaust through his oratorio And The Trains Kept Coming..., commissioned by Boston’s Cantata Singers. A special moment for this oratorio was its German premiere at the Nürnberg Opera in 2015. 

As a pianist and founding member of the ButterflyEffect Ensemble, he performs live-composition using a wide array of instruments and techniques. The ensemble is specialized in creating live scores for silent films, covering the early days of the cinema before 1929. 

Navok’s passion for children’s perception of the world, resulted in the creation of The Little Mermaid  (based on H.C. Andersen‘s fairytale) and The Adventures of Pinocchio, based on Carlo Collodi‘s original story. These works were already performed in numerous languages including German, French, Hebrew, Spanish and Korean. 

Awards and fellowships include: Koussevitzky Music Foundation, Fromm Music Foundation, Lili Boulanger Memorial Fund Award, Israel Prime Minister Award (2002, 2010), America-Israel Cultural Foundation, ACUM, Tanglewood Music Center, Cité Internationale des Arts, Aspen Music Festival and the MacDowell Colony. 

Navok has released highly acclaimed CDs, described as “dreamy and utterly gorgeous” by the American Record Guide.

In his free time, Lior enjoys hiking, cooking and hanging out at the beach.
