SIMGE BÜYÜKEDES

 

Born in Istanbul in 1981, Simge Büyükedes graduated from the Istanbul Conservatory of Music in 2007. The same year, she won the international competition for admission to the Accademia di perfezionamento per cantanti lirici at La Scala in Milan, where she studied under Leyla Gencer, Mirella Freni, Luciana Serra, Renato Bruson, Luigi Alva, James Voughan, Vincenzo Scalera, Michael Hampe, Marco Gandini ed Antonio Albanese.

 

Büyükedes sang the role of Frau Fluth in Nicolai’s Merry Wives of Windsor at the Istanbul Opera in 2007 and was chosen to cover the role of Flordiligi in Mozart’s Così fan tutte at La Scala under musical direction of Ottavio Dantone and stage director Michael Hampe. Subsequently she sang at La Scala the roles of the Contessa and Marcellina in The Marriage of Figaro under Giovanni Antonini and directed by Giorgio Strehler in 2008, as well as the Prima Donna in Donizetti’s Le convenienze ed inconvenienze teatrali, conducted by Marco Guidarini and staged by Antonio Albanese in 2009.

 

Other highlights of the 2009/10 season were Beethoven's Ninth Symphony at the Ravello Festival with the chorus of the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, and her debut at the 88th opera festival in the Arena di Verona, where she sang Frasquita in Carmen, conducted by Julian Kovatchev and directed by Franco Zeffirelli. At the same time she covered the roles of Liu in Turandot and Leonora in Il Trovatore.

 

During the 2010/11 season, she was heard as Leonora in Il Trovatore, directed by Cristina Mazzavillani Muti, at the Ravenna, Jesi, Fermo, Cosenza, Ferrara and Pisa theatres, and made her debut at the Teatro dell'opera in Rome as Anna in Nabucco, under the baton of Riccardo Muti and staged by Jean-Paul Scarpitta.

 

In July 2011, she won the 3rd prize and the media prize at the International Hans Gabor Belvedere Competition in Vienna.

 

Recent and upcoming engagements include the title role in Tosca in Trapani, concerts with José Carreras in her home country, Ancella di Amelia in Simon Boccanegra at the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome (Conductor:Riccardo Muti, Stage Director: Adrian Noble), her debut at the 2013 edition of the Salzburg festival as Anna in Nabucco under Muti, her first appearence in the United States with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and her debut as Mimì in the new Bohème production of the Malmö Opera.
