After completing a Bachelor of Music from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music Australian soprano Anita Watson graduated from the Australian Opera Studio and Cologne Opera Studio as well as the Jette Parker Young Artist Programme at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
Anita has won prizes in many prestigious competitions, amongst them the Australian Singing Competition, the Queen Sonja International Music Competition in Oslo, Neue Stimmen in Germany and the Placido Domingo Operalia Competition. Her brilliant performance at the 2009 ARD Music Competition in Munich brought her the first prize as well as the audience prize.
As a Jette Parker Young Artist at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden she performed several roles including title role in Donizetti's Rita, Naiad (Ariadne auf Naxos), Gretel and Dewfairy (Hänsel und Gretel), First Lady (Die Zauberflöte), Flowergirl (Parsifal) and Second Woman (Dido and Aeneas). She also understudied Contessa (Le Nozze di Figaro), Donna Anna (Don Giovanni) and Mimí (La Bohème). For the Australian and Cologne opera studios she sang the title role in Handel's Xerxes, Cleopatra (Giulio Cesare), Lucia (The Rape of Lucretia), Pedro (Don Quichotte), Susanna (Le Nozze di Figaro), Micaëla (Carmen) and Barena (Jenufa).
In 2010 Anita made her house debuts at Teatro La Fenice in Venice as Governess (The turn of the screw) and at the Salzburg Festival as 5th Maid (Elektra). In season 2010-11 she added the roles Mimí (Nationale Reisopera in Holland) and Donna Anna (Landestheater Salzburg) to her repertoire. In 2011 she returned to La Fenice in Venice in the role of Donna Anna, followed by an engagement for the same role at Opera Australia. She returns to the Royal Opera House as First Lady (Die Zauberflöte) in 2013. Future plans include the Governess at the Théatre du Capitole in Toulouse France, Ann Trulove (The Rake’s Progress) in Santiago de Chile, Mimi (La Boheme) with Opera North and Pamina (Die Zauberflöte) at Welsh National Opera.
In addition to her opera performances, Anita has appeared worldwide in concerts, recitals, as well as on television and radio broadcasts. Highlights include Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia led by Antonio Pappano, Strauss‘ Vier letzte Lieder with the Rheinische Philharmonie in Koblenz and the Mariiinsky Orchestra in St Petersburg, Mahler’s 8th Symphony with Sir Mark Elder as well as a recording of Ariadne auf Naxos for the Chandos label.
Anita’s oratorio repertoire includes Mozart's Requiem, Tippet's A Child of our Time, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, the Fauré Requiem, Mozart's Vesperae Solennes de Confessore, Handel's Messiah, Carmina Burana, Poulenc’s Gloria, Howell’s Hymnus Paradisi and Gounod's Redemption among others. She also sang the Blumenmädchen of Parsifal with the Hallè Orchestra at the BBC Proms 2013 under Sir Mark Elder.
