Ivan Thirion



  • 2007:  Admitted to the Royal Conservatory in Brussels at the age of 17
  • 2009:  Operatic debut as Papageno (Die Zauberflöte) at Opéra Royal de Wallonie, Liège 
  • 2012:  debut with title role of Figaro at the Opéra de Montpellier
  • 2013:  2nd prize at the International Opera Competition in St. Petersburg
  • 2014-16: Zurich Opera studio, roles include Ping (Turandot) and Oronte (Médée)
  • 2016:  Enrico (Lucia di Lammermoor) in Liège


Born in Belgium in 1990, the young baritone was accepted into the Royal Conservatory in Brussels at the age of 17, where he studied with Belgian baritone Marcel Vanaud.

He made his operatic debut on the stage of Opéra Royal de Wallonie in Liège singing Papageno in Mozart‘s Die Zauberflöte. In 2009, following his success in this role, the theatre engaged him as l‘Ogre in Aubert‘s La Forêt Bleue and as Gazella in Donizetti‘s Lucrezia Borgia alongside June Anderson and Ismael Jordi.

During the 2010/11 season, he toured Belgium as Schaunard in a production of La Bohème with Théâtre du Tumulte, sang Tomaso in Un Ballo in Maschera and Marcello in La Bohème at the Opéra Royal de Wallonie, and made his debut at the Opéra de Rouen as Papageno. From 2011-13, he was accepted into the CNIPAL Opera Studio in Marseille, where he appeared in many recitals and productions with collaborating French theatres such as Marseille, Avignon, Toulon, Nancy, Limoges and Bordeaux. Additionally, he performed Antonio in Le Nozze di Figaro in Liège and Charleroi and Monsieur Verdic in Ne criez pas au loup at the Opéra de Rouen.

More recent engagements include Figaro in Le Nozze di Figaro at the Opéra de Montpellier, directed by Jean-Paul Scarpitta, a cover of Don Carlo di Varga in La Forza del Destino in Liège, a recital and a performance in Benjamin Godard‘s La Vivandière at the Radio France Festival in Montpellier, as well as Lord Cecil in Donizetti‘s Maria Stuarda at Opéra de Liège.

Ivan has also been a very active concert singer and recitalist, having performed in Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Bulgaria. In July 2013, he was awarded the „Wil Keune prize for a young singer with real potential“ at the 32th edition of the Belvedere Competition in Amsterdam.

From 2014-16, Ivan was a member of the International opera studio of the Zurich opera, where he sung roles such as Ping (Turandot), Coryphee (Comte Ory), Rodomonte in Haydn’s Orlando Paladino and Oronte in Charpentier’s Médée .

Ivan’s most recent and upcoming guest performances include the role of Lord Enrico Ashton in Donizetti‘s Lucia di Lammermoor as well as Comte de Toulouse in Verdi’s Jerusalem at Opéra de Liège, Bartolo in Der Barbier von Sevilla für Kinder at the Salzburg Festival, Serviteur and Aubergiste in Prokofieff’s L’Ange du Feu at Opéra de Lyon, Belcore in Donizetti’s Elisir d’amore at the Aalto theatre in Essen, Albert in Massenet’s Werther, with Opera Zuid and Le Dancaïre in Carmen at the Opera National de Montpellier.
