Young Italian stage director Pamela Recinella made her first and highly acclaimed debut, directing Verdi’s Macbeth in April 2016 at the Erfurt theatre. This season she is maintaining a busy schedule directing Der Fliegende Holländer in Tallinn, Madama Butterfly in Hongkong and Nabucco in Würzburg.

Pamela Recinella studied Communication Science in Bologna under the direction of Umberto Eco, whilst in the meantime attending classes in acrobatics and movement in the theatre school Galante Garrone. She continued her studies in physical theatre, movement, mime and masks in the Milan International School of Acting with Ida Kuniaki, a student of Jacques Pierre Lecoq and teacher in Milan’s famous acting school Il Piccolo Theatre.

After Milan she moved to Venice where she pursued a Master’s programme in Theory and Techniques of Music Theatre, specialising in Stage Direction and studying with Dario Fo, Luca Ronconi, Ezio Toffolutti and Romeo Castellucci. During this time she attended exchange programmes in Paris at the Comedie Française in the production of Les Baccante, under the stage direction of Andrè Wilms, and in Berlin at the Deutsches Theater and Volksbühne in the productions Volpone and Das Große Fressen, under the direction of Dimiter Gotscheff. Following this period of study she staged, acted in and wrote Platani, which had a great critical success in the press in Venice.

Subsequently she realised her project Little Italy in Berlin and was engaged in the Foundation Bauhaus Dessau to realise several installations. She was also invited by the Teatro Experimental de Fuerteventura to write and act in the project Inspirados por el sonido Amarillo for the Canaries Festival of Theatre and Dance. In the wake of this experience in Spain she worked as assistant in the Leipziger Tanztheater under the direction of Irina Pauls, also assisting in the production of Killer Loop produced by Cocoondance Company. It was here that she took her first observership with the Leipzig Opera for the production of Ariadne auf Naxos, staged by K. Gruber, before going on to gain experience in a variety of important opera houses across Europe such as the Dresden Opera, Royal Opera of Copenhagen and the Komische Oper Berlin, observing the work of stage directors like A. Homoki, K. Warner, M. Hampe and J. Schaaf. She has latterly worked as Assistant Director at Oper Graz in several productions with such stage directors as Marco Arturo Marelli, Peter Konwitschny, Stephen Lawless, Vincent Boussard and Mariam Clement.

From 2010-13 she worked as stage manager and assistant director for the Salzburg Festival. In 2011 she participated in the Ring Award International Competition for stage and set direction, where she reached the Semifinal and won the Public Prize; In 2013 she directed a semi-staged Simon Boccanegra in Erfurt followed by her work as Staff Director for WNO's production of Moses und Aron at the Royal Opera House, London in 2014. In 2015 Pamela worked as assistant director to David Pountney for Chorus! and as Revival/Assistant Director for Anna Bolena, Alessandro Talevi at the Donizzetti Festival of Bergamo.
